Neck Lift

A sagging neck is not always a result of aging. It can be a hereditary trait, or may result after a significant weight loss.

In younger patients, neck liposuction alone may be sufficient to correct the problem. However, patients with aging necks usually require a "neck lift" which may include a cervicoplasty to remove excess skin and a platysmaplasty to tighten the platysma muscles, which run down each side of the neck.

If you have jowls (fatty deposits at the jaw line), loose hanging skin, or if the muscles under the skin of your throat have grown lax, surgery can help correct your profile. A neck lift can be performed in conjunction with a facelift or other surgeries, depending on the desired results. While some people only need a neck lift, and not a full facelift, the combination of the two can give you a younger, more refreshed look. And, if you have extra fat under your chin, neck liposuction will enhance the results of surgery.

FAQs

How is a neck lift performed?

Neck surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes between two and three hours. When there is extra skin that needs to be removed, incisions are placed behind the ears to hide any scars. Incisions for neck liposuction are made under the chin.

How long is the recovery period?

Depending upon the specifics of your operation, you may wear a compression bandage and may have to sleep with your head elevated for a few days. Plan to take at least one week off from work or public activities; your bruises should begin to fade within two weeks. Wait at least three weeks, if not longer, to resume strenuous activities and exercise.

Are there any complications associated with neck lift surgery?

You will experience swelling and bruising that can last for several days, and you may experience numbness in the weeks following surgery. These are normal occurrences, and not a cause for concern. As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection. You should keep the incision site clean and report any unusual discharge immediately.

How long will the results last?

The results of a neck lift will depend on your age and other circumstances. You will always appear younger than if you had not had a neck lift; however, the aging process will continue over time. Expect the results to last up to 10 years.
